St. David’s Episcopal Church – Washington, DC
In the winter of 2015, The Sheridan Group was hired to conduct a Campaign Feasibility Study for St. David’s. The purpose of the campaign was to celebrate the 75th Anniversary of the church’s home in that location, and also address significant capital needs within the church property, including drainage/flooding issues, repairs to the roof and bell tower, and the construction of a columbarium.
Our report recommended that the parish was in position to conduct a successful campaign, but would likely not be able to raise the funds necessary for all of the initiatives contained in the Case for Support used for the Feasibility Study.
Balancing the practical needs of the church with the feedback from the Feasibility Study, St. David’s moved forward with the Cornerstone Campaign in order to address the needs that were most pressing, notably the work on the bell tower, the drainage/flooding issues and the stained glass windows.
Our study recommended initiating a leadership gifts phase with a target of $640,000, with simultaneous cultivation of former (many ‘lost’) parishioners and interested external community funding sources, given St. Stephens significant role as a hub of community activity.
The Sheridan Group assisted St. David’s in the recruitment and training of the Campaign Cabinet, including the Co-Chairs and Honorary Co-Chairs, which went to work beginning in November of 2015. Based on a tremendously effective Leadership Gifts Phase, St. Stephen’s was able to announce an overall goal of $750,000 for its Widening the Circle Campaign, which it exceeded ahead of schedule in November, 2012.
In April of 2016 at the 75th Anniversary celebration, Father Robin Dodge publicly announced to a crowd of more than 150 parishioners that the campaign had exceeded its goal of $480,000 and that needed repairs had already begun to be scheduled.
St. David’s was at a bit of a crossroads when we were first introduced to The Sheridan Group. It is a truly beautiful church, but years of deferred maintenance and ongoing issues with flooding were causing damage throughout the structure. The gorgeous bell tower and roof were both in need of repair; the stained glass windows – a point of pride for the parish – were buckling and in need of restoration; and the flooding in the undercroft hampered our ability to fully serve our community. On the other hand, we had a Vestry that was committed to fixing those issues, and a pending 75th Anniversary celebrating how long the church had been at that location. Dave and Jeff worked with us every step of the way – from engaging the parish in the Feasibility Study, to helping recruit leadership for the Campaign; from managing leadership gift cultivation and solicitation, to assisting with plans for the campaign’s kick-off and celebration events – The Sheridan Group worked with us through everything and made sure that our campaign was a success.
